Nuseirat, June 5 – Driven to the limits of creativity among the deprivation and logistical constraints of overwhelming Israeli military superiority, occupants of this coastal Mediterranean territory have finally developed a device that will halt the IDF’s onslaught, though some caution against using such doomsday technology in that crowded milieu: a fabric banner to signal complete surrender.
The innovation was developed by a small committee of non-Hamas residents of the Gaza Strip, and its use is therefore an unresolved question, since the Islamist organization still has the final word – subject to its paymasters in Doha and Tehran – on whether to deploy a device with consequences of such magnitude.
“The White Flag’ device, as we’re calling, has the potential to end this war once and for all,” gushed one of the inventors, who spoke on condition of anonymity for his own safety. “But using it on the scale of the entire Gaza Strip would be be controversial. I can see testing it in a localized way in certain battle zones, but this is proven technology to induce a decisive end to wars.”
The man who gave his initial as F described the device. “It initially operates line-of-sight only,” he explained. “Optimally, you want to deploy it from a commanding vantage point so direct exposure to it affects the maximum area of the battle zone. But once its effects begin – and that should be anywhere from a few seconds to a few hours, depending on ambient noise, visibility, and other factors – there’s a ripple effect that occurs across the battlefield.”
F acknowledged serious opposition to the use of the White Flag. “I’m not a combat person – I’m a car mechanic,” he admitted. “But that also gives me insight into the technical workings of things. I know there are lots of Gazans who want to keep doing things the way they’ve been doing them, believing that just one more failed rocket launch, one more staged death of a child in an airstrike, one more ‘famine’ propaganda video and the whole Zionist military operation – even the whole Zionist enterprise – will just come crashing down. A lot of the established decision-makers have that mindset. They’re not ready for a different approach. The White Flag is a threat to their supposed superior wisdom and experience. That’s where the opposition to using it comes from.”
F and his co-inventors aim to convince smaller units to deploy the White Flag, to demonstrate the decisive effect it has on a battlefield, and thus perhaps to sway opinion in favor of White Flag deployment across the Gaza Strip – and perhaps in the West Bank, as well.
