Neglectful Founders Forgot To Include Law That Prime Minister Must Quit If Elites Don’t Like Him

“A healthy system has checks and balances that allow for the people with the correct opinions to get rid of those who don’t agree.”

Tel Aviv, May 14 – Legal scholars again lamented today that the group who established Israel’s governmental and legal system failed to institute any formal process by which commentators, journalists, and establishment institution heads allied with the premier’s political rivals can remove him from office without convincing enough voters to do so.

Academics and political scientists told PreOccupied Territory on Wednesday they cannot help but consider David Ben-Gurion, Golda Meir, and other giants of the Zionist movement short-sighted at best, negligent at worst, for not providing in the foundational structure of the Israeli political system a way for elites to oust a prime minister they dislike – an oversight that threatens the very underpinnings of democracy.

“Media moguls and personalities, celebrities, other people with a platform – they all depend on the voters,” lamented Israel Democracy Institute fellow Lair Yapid. “That’s not the way a healthy system works. A healthy system has checks and balances that allow for the captains of the society, the people with the correct opinions, to get rid of those who don’t agree with them, or who make it difficult for them to continue doing the captaining as they see fit. For some inscrutable reason, our founding generation neglected to implement any such mechanism.”

Pundits and academics alike agreed that the apparent lapse in judgment and foresight highlights the need for Israel to adopt a formal constitution instead of the set of Basic Laws that lay out the functions, procedures, powers, and limitations among the various organs of government.

“What once seemed obvious, for granted, was that a certain class would be holding the reins,” explained journalist Amir Tibbon. “The predominantly secular, socialist, European-minded elite that prevailed in the majority coalitions from the very birth of the state until the 1970’s never dreamed things might change, and that other, unworthy demographic groups might assert themselves. Now the last bastion of assured elite control is the Supreme Court. We’ve been forced to impute more and more power to that institution to prevent the other branches of government from succumbing to the will of the majority and, heaven forfend, do the jobs assigned to them under law.”

“We know the voters can’t be trusted to deliver control to us again,” he continued. “The voters are the biggest threat to democracy. We must therefore develop a new system that enshrines permanent hegemony to the social and political class that posed for all the photographs when Israel was established, plus any other people they might deign to allow into their elite cadres once loyalty to the elites is confirmed.”
