Zionist Union Accuses Ezra, Nehemiah Of Isolating Judea By Banning Intermarriage

“Bib- I mean, Ezra, go home.”

book-of-ezraJerusalem, December 29 – Leaders on the political left in the Perso-Median province of Judea leveled harsh criticism at Ezra and Nehemiah for pursuing policies that only cause isolation when the society should be opening up, given its dependence on foreign powers.

Zionist Union heads Isaac Herzog and Tzipi Livni told reporters that a decision by Ezra to put a stop to intermarriage between Jews and non-Jews in the reconstituted autonomous region represents nothing less than a slap in the face to peoples supportive of Jews, and disinclines them from helping to reestablish Jewish life in the ancestral Jewish land. They added that Nehemiah’s insistence on building a wall around Jerusalem was a perilous rejection of friendship.

“This is but the latest in a short-sighted, tribalist, and dangerous series of policies the current leadership has been pursuing,” charged Livni. “It is past time for Ezra and Nehemiah to step down, because they are bringing failure and isolation to our people. Who but the willfully blind cannot see what loneliness awaits us if we keep people from marrying whomever they wish? Those old-fashioned ideas of the First Temple clearly don’t work anymore.”

“There was a time when I might have considered bringing my faction into a unity government with Ezra,” added Herzog. “But that time is officially over. Now I will dedicate my exclusive efforts to building a real alternative to this emerging disaster. The people have been deceived for too long by these two demagogues. We need real change and real Zionism, not cronyism that rewards adherence to the personal prejudices of a leader no matter how much vision and divine sanction he has. Bib- I mean, Ezra, go home.”

Others in the Zionist Union described how Ezra’s policies were jeopardizing the Jewish relationship with Persia. “The Emperor has made it clear he wishes to blend the distinctions among the peoples of his empire, whatever his predecessor Cyrus thought,” argued Nahman Shai, referring to the Median ruler who allowed the Jews to return to Judah and restore their ancient Temple. “Insisting on maintaining our own ethnic and spiritual identity now is the height of brazenness, and it invites animosity both from surrounding peoples and from the central government in Persia.”

Unconfirmed reports place Livni at a meeting with Parshandatha and Aspatha, regional governors with ties to their father, the vizier Haman ben Hamedatha, aimed at finalizing the wording of a letter to the Emperor accusing the Jews of seditious activity centered around their efforts to rebuild the Temple. Other reports claim she was negotiating over a position in a new political party with their backing. Livni has denied there was such a meeting, but her public calendar indicates several visits to those officials.
