“Zionist machinations never cease.”
West Rogers Park, May 1 – Islamist-led demonstrators dispersed in disappointment this evening, witnesses reported, following their discovery that the Jewish-owned establishment outside which they intended to hold their demonstration had closed for three weeks amid a remodeling project.
About twenty would-be protesters arrived at Joey’s Kosher Bistro in this Chicago suburb just after seven in the evening Wednesday to showcase their displeasure at Israel’s treatment of Palestinians and the Jewish State’s refusal to acquiesce to its own violent destruction at the hands of Palestinian and other terrorist groups. The group instead noticed a sign on Joey’s shuttered front door offering apologies to customers for the inconvenience, but the restaurant will not reopen until the following week, depending on the progress of renovations.
“This is outrageous,” declared protest organizer Hatem Bazanian of Jewish Voice for Peace and Students for Justice in Palestine. “Zionist machinations never cease.”
Recriminations soon began flying. Several protesters accused Bazanian of failing to prepare for this eventuality or even to do basic research. Others defended the organizers, insisting that the Joey’s website gives no indication of its current closure – only that the restaurant welcomed patrons to return “after Passover,” a vague enough phrase that anyone could misunderstand. The Jewish festival of liberation ended on Monday night, April 21.
Four protesters attempted to smash the shop window. The shutters shielded the glass from the blow. A passerby alerted a patrol car and the protesters scattered. Police said they were soliciting and reviewing security camera footage from the area.
A message to Joey’s owner and manager, Joseph Shulman, went unanswered last night and this morning. Neighboring proprietors – one a pharmacist, the other a publican – disclaimed any specific knowledge of the renovation schedule or progress. “The Shulmans are a family business,” shrugged a bartender at the pub, who gave his name as Stan. “Don’t know much about them.”
The pharmacy staff refused to answer questions without an online appointment through the app.
A frequent customer of Joey’s called a reporter’s attention to messages posted on a Chicagoland Jewish community WhatsApp group, where residents both expressed concern about a possible recurrence when diners are present, and mocked the frustrated attempt to intimidate Jews.
“It’s obviously not antisemitic to harass random Jews about Israel,” one contributor suggested as an explanation of the demonstrators’ arguments. “It’s not antisemitism unless it comes from the Right Wing region of politics. Otherwise it’s just sparkling social justice.”
