Earlier attempts tried to fly donkeys into Gaza, to serve a similar conjugal role.
Kerem Shalom Crossing, November 13 – Israeli security officials announced the interception two days ago of several unmanned aerial vehicles from Egypt, headed for the Hamas-controlled areas of Khan Yunis and bearing cargo of several small animals as a marriage gift to accompany the rest of the delivery, a prepubescent bride.
A spokesman for the military described the downing of the drones, which took place on Monday, as the most significant interdiction of Egypt-to-Gaza smuggling achieved so far.
“Typically, the drones carry weapons or drugs,” explained Colonel Shalom Epstein. “But there’s demand for all sorts of goods. This interception represents a less common occurrence, but there have been some bizarre attempts. Those are just the ones we know about.”
Colonel Epstein recalled an episode earlier this year in which border patrol personnel brought down a drone carrying several flasks of camel urine, which many in Arabian desert culture consider to have healing or invigorating properties if imbibed.
“But two years ago there was a steady stream of print media,” he observed, “especially gay porn magazines. Power cuts during the war meant internet porn wasn’t always accessible, and where there’s demand, enterprising smugglers will always find a way. In fact, [Gaza Hamas chief Yahya] Sinwar was carrying two or three such magazines when our soldiers killed him.”
Intelligence reports indicate attempts to fly donkeys into Gaza, as well, though no confirmed successes have been recorded; those animals, the reports concluded, serve a similar conjugal role as the none-year-old bride in the current case.
The interdiction of the girl and her dowry has sparked clashed in Gaza. “Our sources indicate some fisticuffs, and some firefights, between two rival clans,” disclosed Epstein. “The bride comes from a clan in Gaza that has an influential presence among the Bedouin in the Sinai Peninsula, and the wedding was supposed to cement an alliance with another set of families in Gaza, part of a reconciliation process after years of tension and outright conflict. But as soon as the drones were intercepted, accusations started flying, so to speak, about informants, betrayal, and incompetence, which led to vows of vengeance and affronts to honor. So, a typical Monday in Gaza.”
Social workers and foster care personnel have taken the girl into custody, where, officials predict, she will be placed with a Negev Bedouin family and registered as a child of the family but in practice serve as yet another wife.
