Sibling Of Freed Hamas Hostage Calls You Idiot If You Think Ordeal Makes Her Immune To His Pranks, Mockery

“It is my solemn duty, to punk and rhetorically smack her down when the opportunity arises.”

Kfar Azza, December 7 – Tomer Abekasis considers you naïve at best, an imbecile at worst, when informed that you believe he will spare his younger sister any needling, annoyance, or rivalry just because she was abducted to the Gaza Strip by Islamists and held there in appalling conditions for nearly two months.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” he retorted, when a journalist told him you expect him to treat his younger sister Netta with extra forbearance and gentleness on account of her ordeal as a hostage. “I have my brotherly duties to fulfill, and fifty days’ worth of it to make up. Are you insane, an idiot, or just a weirdo?”

“No one has made fun of her personal habits or quirks in ways only a brother can – indeed, must – for weeks on end,” he explained. “Her ego is at dire risk of not being held in check at every turn. This is especially true with all the media coverage of her story. As an older brother, it is not merely my pastime, but my solemn duty, to punk and rhetorically smack her down when the opportunity arises. I take the obligation seriously.”

In the time since thirteen-year-old Netta’s return from Hamas captivity ten days ago, sixteen-year-old Tomer has sought openings to perform this pivotal brotherly function, with what he acknowledges is limited success.

“The situation doesn’t always lend itself to it,” he noted with a shake of the head, “and even some of my tried and true barbs land differently now. I have to find ways to adjust. For the longest time I could consistently get under her skin by reminding her I have always been, and will always be, the taller one. I’d call her Bilbo, and that would get a rise out of her, and then I’d point out that getting a rise out of her is probably the only way for her to experience height, things would escalate, we’d all have a good time. But now the nickname is more poignant. Her experience made her long for all of our interactions, no matter how abrasive, and now calling her that makes her smile and want to hug me. That is NOT the reaction I’m looking for.”

Tomer did record a success or two. “She complained the hostages weren’t allowed to shower the whole time,” he recounted. “So I retorted that was a good thing, because if they had allowed her, with the way she showers, we’d still be waiting for her.”
