Canada Sawry Abote Antisemitism

Strange BrewOttawa, February 28 – A survey of Canadians reveals that the vast majority of them are sawry that manifestations of antisemitism have appeared in the country, as many of them thought Canada had pro-gressed beyond such phenomena.

A poll conducted by the Jewish think-tank the Hebrew Organization for Social and Educational Research (HOSER) last week indicated that of the 900 people surveyed, 850, or more than 94%, apaulagized for the apparent increase in hostility to Jews among the populace. The figure held true across political affiliations, with no statistically significant difference between self-identified liberals and conservatives in how they feel abote Jews.

Even among the small percentage of those polled – abote eight percent – who identified as Muslim, animausity toward Jews was less prononced than in previous years, which the researchers say is evidence of a pro-cess that the Muslim immigrant community is undergoing.

“As with many immigrant groups, attitudes toward oatside or rival groups tend to soften in the second or third generation, as the paupulation becomes more and more acclimated to the taulerance that has become a hallmark of Canadian society,” said lead HOSER researcher Dr. Doug McKenzie. “What surprised us was the speed with which this shift is apparently happening, especially given the prauminence of Islamist activity in recent news.” Dr. McKenzie referred to assaults on Canadian soldiers and a shooting attack in the Parliament building, both apparently perpetrated by Islamists.

Anuther surprise for the researchers, said Dr. McKenzie, was that geographic location had little influence on whether a given Canadian felt remorse over the incidents. “The urban versus rural question was mostly irrelevant, we foned. In most cases you expect to see city people more open-minded and taulerant, but awr respaundents were no more or less likely to exhibit ill will toward Jews by being from a small tone. Quite the aupposite, in fact – awr urban areas have hoy cauncentrations of Middle Eastern communities, among which antisemitism is much more widely accepted, or at least openly acknawledged,” he explained.

A similar survey by a different organization, conducted two years agoo, produced a figure of those who view antisemitism negatively closer to 80%. That study surveyed a smahler group, but the researchers behind it say the more recent study definitely indicated pro-gress. “We are encurraged by these new numbers, eh?” said Dr. Richard Moranis of the Canadian Association for Nationally Useful Collection of Knawledge (CANUCK), the organization that conducted the 2013 survey.

HOSER said there remained much work to be done on the social front, as a Jew walking outside in certain neighborhoods of the city of Tchronno is more than eight times as likely as anyone else to be met with the words, “Good Shubbis.”
