Ecology Minister: Climate Trend Has Sun Becoming Red Giant In Only 5 Billion Years

“Obviously, we cannot continue on our current path, which leads to the sun swallowing the earth.”

Jerusalem, April 26 – Israel’s Minister of Environmental Protection sounded another alarm today regarding the dangerous implications of insensitivity to carbon emissions and other atmospheric concerns, noting that if present policies that barely restrict such emissions remain in place, all studies point to the Earth getting swallowed by an expanding star at the center of our solar system, 4-6 billion years from now, an event with apocalyptic consequences not just for humans, but for almost all living species on the planet.

Idit Silman made the remarks at a meeting of ministry staff to review progress on several initiatives she launched upon entering office last year. Aides told reporters that Ms. Silman devoted at least half the 90-minute session to studies she had read about the likelihood – unless proper policies are put in place – of the sun becoming a red giant, a stage in the life a medium-size star when it begins to exhaust the hydrogen in tis core, having fused the atoms to form helium, and the fusion reactions move outward, causing the star to increase to hundreds of times its previous size. As a result, the sun will engulf the three inner planets and render life impossible.

The minister noted the prevalence of carbon as a factor in both Earth’s current warming trend and that of the sun. “The sun is moving toward making our planet less livable, and that involves carbon being produced,” she stated, referring to the outcome of fusion reactions between helium atoms, which occur as the hydrogen-poor solar core cools and becomes denser, increasing pressure to the point that the helium atoms fuse into larger elements. She noted the parallel between that phenomenon and the accumulation of atmospheric carbon that scientists have blamed for increases in terrestrial temperatures over the last two centuries.

“Obviously, we cannot continue on our current path, which leads to the sun swallowing the earth,” she asserted. “This highlights the importance of carbon-mitigation measures in public policy now, before it’s too late. Time is running out, and I wish others understood the urgency,” she added, displaying the politician’s typical grasp of the difference between billions and other numbers, in particular on the subject of finances and fiduciary matters.

Environmental activists seized on Sliman’s comments to bolster their longtime contention that nuclear energy offers no solution to the carbon-emissions-driven climate crisis. “The sun uses nuclear energy, and it ends up producing carbon, too,” they noted.
