‘Free Palestine!’ Becoming Less Likely Than ‘Flee Palestine!’

Despite glorification of “martyrs” and devotion to the land of Palestine in popular Palestinian and Arab media.

Rafah, October 10 – An exodus of Arabs from the Gaza Strip has picked up pace in the last several days in advance of an impending IDF offensive to root out Hamas from the territory after the group’s terrorists massacred more than a thousand civilians in an invasion of southern Israel this past Saturday – prompting observations that the cry to “liberate” the Holy Land from the “Zionist entity” will once again precede not victory over the Jews, but of the Arabs themselves being “liberated” from their erstwhile residences in the land.

As cries of “Free, Free Palestine!” resonated at demonstrations all over the Western world this week, the inhabitants of the Gaza Strip thronged to this border town with Egypt; the latter has now limited passage through the crossing to 2,000 per day. Youth have been leaving Gaza for years, under a repressive Hamas government that enriches itself and diverts resources not to helping Gazans but to killing Israelis – who are now preparing the largest operation in decades to root out Hamas one and for all. Now the phenomenon has accelerated.

The episode recalls 1947 and 48, when confident Arab leaders forecasted a massacre of the Jews in then-British Mandate Palestine and urged Arab residents of the area to clear out to make the inevitable victory over the Jews smoother. Instead, the nascent Israel fought off multiple invading Arab forces, plus local militias, to secure its existence, leaving hundreds of thousands of those who fled stateless and homeless.

Observers noted this week that Israeli national and political resolve to undertake a full-scale retaking of the Gaza Strip – evacuated of all Israeli citizens in 2005 – has reached unprecedented levels. Analysts and political leaders alike have begun to consider the once-unthinkable in the Israeli mainstream: that Israel cannot attain or maintain security unless it reasserts control of the Gaza Strip and the 2 million Palestinian Arabs who live there, as it did from 1967 to 2005. Violence from the Strip worsened since Hamas took over in a 207 coup, and, backed by Iran and Qatar, has sparked multiple wars. The carnage from October 7 has forced Israelis to accept the necessity of an operation, as bloody as it might become, to retake Gaza and destroy Hamas there. Anticipation of such operations has led to attempts by Gaza residents to leave, despite glorification of “martyrs” and devotion to the land of Palestine in popular Palestinian and Arab media.

The “heroic” Hamas operation that killed 1,000 Israelis and injured 2,000 more, to “Free Palestine,” according to experts, will instead, it appears, cause more Palestinians to try to Flee Palestine and make Israel more secure than ever before, with national solidarity and unity at a peak, and its enemies degraded.
