Gaza “Smuggling” Tunnel Actually Leads To Lover’s Bedroom

One juicy line of gossip insists the lover is a man, not a woman.

tunnelRafah, March 18 – Scandal erupted today in this city on the Palestinian side of the Egyptian border when a wife unearthed her husband’s activities down in the passage he had said led to the Egyptian city by the same name, and through which he procured various luxury goods to sell in the coastal territory, in fact proceeded to the home of the husband’s mistress.

Muhammad Ayyash, 39, found himself in hot water today following his wife Bilal’s discovery of a tunnel linking their home on Philadelphi Road to that of a woman living one street away, and not under the main artery and Egyptian border where contraband and often munitions find their way around an Israeli-Egyptian blockade and into the Gaza Strip.

Neighbors reported a series of shouting matches between the couple Thursday morning, loud enough for everyone in the vicinity to piece together the drama. Bilal reportedly enlisted her brother to enter the passage following a series of curious incident that piqued her suspicions, and the brother followed the tunnel north toward a neighboring apartment and not south under Philadelphi and the border fence. He and another brother later returned with flashlights and a phone to document the tunnel’s route and destination in the bedroom of a thirty-two-year-old divorcée.

“He’s in the doghouse now,” observed a neighbor who gave his name only as Hussein. “It’s all the worse for him because she comes from an influential family, and they won’t tolerate his messing around on her like that. Most women here would be more or less forced to accept a husband’s peccadilloes, but this guy wasn’t exactly thinking with the head on his shoulders.”

Community grapevine talk consisted today of perhaps-embellished accounts of the saga: unfamiliar scents on some of Muhammad’s clothes; his sudden change of cologne and attention to personal grooming; and questions regarding a lack of actual goods coming up through the tunnel. Conflicting reports swirled concerning the various explanations the husband offered as cover, but all agreed he had warned Bilal not to venture into the passage because of booby traps that only he knew how to defeat.

Reports also conflicted regarding the identity of the divorced lover, with one juicy line of gossip insisting the lover is a man, not a woman. Confirmation of the various tales has proved difficult as Bilal’s family themselves on keeping the incident as quiet as possible to prevent the episode shaming her and them, all the more so in this conservative society if a homosexual affair lies at the root of the deception.
