IDF Stockpile Of Challah Rolls Might Be Insufficient To Thwart Another Greta Flotilla

They only have stockpiles of the standard Israeli roll somewhere between a hot dog bun, only denser, and a baguette, only softer and smoother.

Tel Aviv, July 24 – Officials at Israel’s Ministry of Defense and in the ranks of the military itself voiced concern today that resources to repel another attempt by a Scandinavian ecology-turned-Palestine activist to breach Israel’s blockade of Hamas in the Gaza Strip could fall short of the requisite quantities, specifically the availability of braided bread associated with the Jewish Sabbath, bread that played a pivotal role in intercepting the previous attempt.

Defense and military officials speaking on condition of anonymity disclosed to a reporter that the stockpile of challah rolls in the IDF arsenal has been depleted of late, and not replenished in sufficient amounts since the last time Greta Thunberg and other activists made a failed attempt to “deliver aid” to Gaza and, upon detention in Israel, received food that included such rolls – which video and photographic evidence shows Ms. Thunberg enjoyed and appreciated.

If the challah stockpile remains low, the officials warned, the incoming flotilla – Thunberg’s second attempt at the stunt over the last several months – will require interception by other, less ideal, means, and could tax IDF resources in other logistical areas.

Israel and Egypt have maintained a blockade of the Gaza Strip since Hamas took over the territory in 2007. International courts have found the blockade legal, to prevent war materiel from reaching Hamas and its allied militias in Gaza, who periodically launch rockets at Israeli communities, and who invaded southern Israel in October 2023 and launched a war that has so far claimed more than a thousand Israeli lives and upwards of 50,000 Palestinians lives, about half of the Palestinian total combatants.

International Law experts explained that enforcement of the blockade requires that Israel prevent even stunts such as Greta’s from getting through; Israel has thwarted other such stunts, all the while offering to transfer the symbolic cargo to Gaza through relief organizations that already operate there. Last time Greta tried, however, IDF interdiction units only by chance had on hand challah rolls; this time, with another Greta flotilla inbound, they only have stockpiles of the standard Israeli roll somewhere between a hot dog bun, only denser, and a baguette, only softer and smoother.

Defense procurement personnel have reached out to producers of the challah rolls, but remain concerned that fresh production – which already must account for commercial demand with the Jewish Sabbath approaching – might not reach IDF facilities in time for any interception operations to make use of the rolls.
