NGOs: Parents Moving Son Out Of Room During Plumbing Work ‘Ethnic Cleansing’

This is coerced population transfer and in contravention of the Geneva Conventions.”

Gedera, September 9 – Humanitarian Groups announced today that Galit and Noam Shenker’s impending renovation violates International Human Rights Law because it includes the displacement of a person from his native locale, in this case from the northwest upstairs bedroom to the downstairs southwest bedroom, sometimes known as the guest room, for the duration of the pipe, heating, and electrical infrastructure repairs necessary to keep the house in good condition.

Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Btselem, and several other human rights organizations criticized the Shenkers’ decision to move 12-year-old Shalev into the spare ground-floor accommodations for the estimated week-plus it will take to get the work done, calling the policy ethnic cleansing.

“The Shenkers have clearly stated their intention to perpetrate a crime against humanity,” stated Amnesty International, echoing its position on the IDF evacuating Gaza residents from harm’s way. “Shalev has the right to remain where he is, and any attempt to deprive him of that right violates every moral principle.”

Shalev has expressed willingness to move to the guest room, even preferring its proximity to the kitchen, but the human rights advocates adhered to the same position as on Gazans willing to vacate the conflict zones. “This is coerced population transfer and in contravention of the Geneva Conventions,” asserted Human Rights Watch. “Yes, the law calls for the belligerents to facilitate noncombatant safety by allowing them the means to evacuate, but as far as Israel is concerned, we hold that the only valid way to do that is not to operate in the first place.”

Btselem took a more nuanced approach. “We join our allied organizations in condemning whatever Israel does, or Israelis do,” their press release read. “In this case, however, we reserve our final assessment pending further investigation, because in the Shalev incident, the displaced population is Jewish, and we hesitate to get in the way when Jews are ethnically cleaned. Why, our entire funding structure and personnel choices can only be reconciled with a desire to see Jews ethnically cleansed from anywhere outside the 1949 armistice lines at the very least, and from Israel proper entirely, if our backers get their way.”

A coalition of activists have declared their intentions to form a relief flotilla for Shalev, including at least four washed-up C-list celebrities and a handful of professional activists, as soon as they can figure out why the human rights organizations are paying attention to anything other than Gaza.
